What’s the Correct Move?

Here is what the author (Possawat Piankij) says about the position:

“7-point match. 4-0 to brown. White to play 52. What’s your play and why?”

Bill Robertie:

When one side escapes a back checker, they play a little safer from then on, respecting the fact that escaping a back checker is a big deal. When one side escapes both back checkers, as here, they play absurdly safe. Escaping both back checkers is a really, really big deal and must be respected. So 13/8 5/3 is essentially forced.

Paul Weaver:

I do not know, but the clock is running so I have to make a play.

My play is 13/8 6/4*. Gives 25 shots (4s 5s 13 23 22).

Gives Oppt 9 hit-and-covers:

55 44 22 54 53 43, but even after these I have 16 numbers that enter and cover something: 51 52 53 54 55 41 42 43 44.

You need very little excuse to double at this score. Maybe should have done it before this roll. You might have rolled a better number if you had doubled before the roll.

Pray for Oppt to roll one of his 4 fans but you retain good chances even if he hits.

Better to leave shots now while Oppt has a weak board than later when Oppt has a stronger board.

Jeff Keating:

8-3 6-4 seems clear. You could really use a gammon given the score. If you get hit there is a chance to hit back, and you are way ahead in the race so being hit does not mean you lose. If you don't get hit then you have a great chance to make points in your board and seem to have good blocking and racing chances for a gammon.
